Houthi airport strikes widen Saudi air defense challenge as Yemen fighting intensifies

Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen claimed a new attack on Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday, October 8, extending a burst of strikes on Saudi aviation targets that Saudi officials said killed three people and wounded 36 a day earlier.¹²

The latest claim came as Saudi-led coalition officials said air defenses intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched toward Riyadh and another fired toward Khamis Mushait, a southwestern city near the Yemeni border that hosts major military facilities.¹ The Houthis said they fired a ballistic missile at King Khalid International Airport and warned international airlines that Saudi airspace had become a theater for Houthi military operations. The group excluded airspace over Mecca and Medina from the warning.⁵

Saudi officials did not immediately confirm damage from the October 8 Houthi claim, and the Houthis provided no evidence that the missile struck the airport.¹ But the episode followed reported explosions in Riyadh, an airport evacuation described by a witness to the Associated Press and flight disruptions at the kingdom’s busiest air gateway.¹

The sequence marks a widening challenge for Saudi air defense. The Houthis are not only trying to leverage their positions near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where recent fighting has threatened one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. They are also signaling an intent to impose costs on Saudi air travel and civilian infrastructure far from the immediate Red Sea front.²⁷

What was fired and what was intercepted

The clearest public account of the October 8 exchange came from the Saudi-led coalition, which said two ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh and one aimed at Khamis Mushait were intercepted and destroyed.¹ The Houthi claim focused on King Khalid International Airport, saying a ballistic missile had been used in the Riyadh strike.⁵

Those claims followed a broader Houthi statement on October 7 by spokesman Yahya Saree, who said the group had launched drones and ballistic missiles at King Khalid International Airport, Abha International Airport and Khamis Mushait Air Base.⁴ Saudi officials said separately that a ballistic missile was intercepted north of Riyadh and that the launch platform in Houthi-held Sanaa had been destroyed. The Associated Press said it could not independently verify the claim.²

The weapons mix described by the parties — ballistic missiles, drones and attacks on airport facilities — is consistent with Houthi tactics developed during years of cross-border war against Saudi Arabia. But the tempo and target selection are notable. Riyadh’s main international airport, Abha’s civilian airport near the Yemen border and Khamis Mushait’s air base together span strategic, civilian and military aviation nodes.⁴⁶

Casualties at Riyadh and Abha

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said attacks on facilities at Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport killed three foreign nationals and injured 36 people.³ The Associated Press reported that the Abha attack killed Moroccan and Algerian residents and wounded 28 others, while the Riyadh airport attack killed a Sudanese national and wounded eight others.²

Reuters, citing Saudi civil aviation authorities, reported the same overall toll: one person killed and eight wounded at King Khalid International Airport, and two killed and 28 wounded at Abha.⁷ Saudi authorities said one attack occurred Tuesday and the other Wednesday, without specifying which airport was struck on which day.⁷

The deaths were the first reported fatalities from the recent Houthi airport attacks since Saudi Arabia and allied Yemeni forces launched a major ground and air offensive aimed at reversing Houthi gains along Yemen’s western coast and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.¹²

Aviation impact spreads beyond the battlefield

The attacks immediately affected civilian aviation. The Associated Press reported a witness account from King Khalid International Airport describing halted outgoing flights, emergency crews and instructions for passengers to leave checked luggage behind during an evacuation.¹ The flight-tracking service Flightradar24 said the airport had closed again after the October 8 blasts, according to AP.¹

The National reported that Riyadh departures were delayed or canceled after the attacks, citing aviation-impact data from Flightradar24.⁸ That disruption matters beyond Saudi Arabia. Riyadh is a major Gulf travel hub, and even short closures or repeated alerts can ripple through connecting flights, airline scheduling and insurance assessments.

The Houthis’ explicit warning to airlines sharpened that signal. By saying Saudi airspace was a theater of operations, the group appeared to be trying to turn battlefield pressure in Yemen into a broader air-traffic risk calculation for international carriers, even if Saudi air defenses continue intercepting incoming missiles.⁵

A shift from Red Sea leverage

The airport campaign does not replace the Houthis’ Red Sea strategy, but it appears to broaden it. Recent fighting has centered on territory near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Yemen’s western coast, where Houthi positions can threaten shipping flows and give the group leverage over Saudi-backed forces.²⁷

Reuters reported that battles have focused around areas overlooking Bab el-Mandeb, a route made more important by regional disruptions to trade through the Strait of Hormuz.⁷ The Associated Press noted that roughly 12% of global trade transits Bab el-Mandeb and that Houthi positions around the strait aid the group’s campaign against Saudi-linked shipping.²

The attacks on airports suggest the Houthis are adding a second pressure line: civilian aviation and Saudi domestic infrastructure. AFP reported that the group has claimed a wave of attacks on Saudi civilian infrastructure in recent weeks as Riyadh-backed forces pressed a counteroffensive against Houthi territorial gains.⁶

That approach raises the cost of Saudi involvement in Yemen in several ways. It forces Riyadh to defend distant urban and airport targets, not only border zones. It complicates commercial aviation planning. And it creates public pressure after civilian casualties, even when Saudi defenses intercept incoming missiles.¹²

Saudi retaliation and the next test

The Saudi-led coalition has responded with expanded strikes inside Yemen. AFP reported that the coalition said it hit 82 Houthi targets after the airport attacks, including missile facilities, command centers, communications systems and gathering sites.⁶ Gulf News, citing coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, reported that the strikes covered Saada, Hodeidah, Al-Jawf and Marib and included 11 mountain-based ballistic missile storage facilities in Saada.⁹

The coalition framed the retaliation as a response to attacks on civilian airports and said such strikes would not go unpunished.⁹ The Houthis, meanwhile, have tied their cross-border attacks to Saudi-led operations in Yemen and have continued to claim that their weapons reached intended targets.⁴⁵

For regional security watchers, the immediate question is whether the October 7-8 strikes become an episodic escalation or the start of a sustained air campaign against Saudi aviation. The available evidence points to a deliberate expansion of Houthi targets. Riyadh’s main airport, Abha’s airport, Khamis Mushait’s air base and warnings to airlines all place aviation infrastructure at the center of the group’s messaging.⁴⁵⁸

Still, the military balance remains difficult to assess. Several claims from both sides could not be independently verified, and the fast-moving battlefield in Yemen limits outside access.⁶ What is clear is that Saudi air defense is now being tested across civilian airports, military bases and strategic infrastructure, while fighting continues around the Red Sea corridor that first gave the Houthis their broader leverage.¹⁷
